Two held for bank fraud

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation, Mumbai, arrested two persons on Monday in connection with the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 15 lakh from the Dena Bank, Vasco branch last year. Sahid A Malik and Asgar H Anshari have been remanded to police custody till February 13. Said the police, the CBI filed a case on May 7, 1997, against one Naresh K Chopra alias Bharat P Joshi and some unknown persons. Probe revealed that Malik and Anshari along with a third person had opened an bank account by forging documents and had withdrawn the entire sum.
  • One held for duty evasion

  • Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit arrested a businessman this afternoon for evading customs duty to the tune of Rs 43 lakh. Haresh K Sheth has been remanded to judicial custody till February 24. He was also allegedly involved in the illegal import of glass beads for making artificial jewellery. Eleven kgs of beads worth Rs 35,000 and several incriminating documents were alsoseized.
  • Business rivalry leads to stabbing

  • A cable operator at Borivli west stabbed his partner over business rivalry on Monday. Said the police, Oscar Pereira (50) was stabbed by his partner Rodal Josheph Pereira and Navinbhai K Seth (53) near Sumaniya hotel at I C Colony at 7.25 pm. The duo then caught a rickshaw and even stabbed the rickshaw driver, Chayanand Krishna Wadekar, on the back. Oscar been admitted to hospital.
