Contrary to reports that Cristiano De Lima Junior never underwent medical screening after coming to Dempo Sports Club, a high level club official, wishing anonymity, said he’d acually been tested on two occassions. One, when he signed up with the club, as an insurance policy — worth Rs 2.1 lakh — required him to undergo medical tests. And two, a mere six days before the ill-fated match against Mohun Bagan. While playing Churchill Brothers on November 29, Cristiano had been fouled, at which time he’d received an injury to the stomach and the nose. ‘‘We not only ran a series of tests, we also did an MRI scan,’’ said the official adding that any fault in the star striker’s health would have shown up.Six days later, Cristiano died. The autopsy report from Bangalore’s Victoria Hospital has announced that Cristiano’s death was due to a cardiac arrest. Countering this claim, the official added, ‘‘Cristiano’s scored some fantastic goals in his career. This (second goal) wasn’t his best, so why would he be excited enough to suffer a heart attack?’’With the body already in Brazil and a possible second post mortem on the anvil — something Cristiano’s wife Juliana has been asking for — another view may just arise, the official pointed out.
