One’s who are through
AFRICA: Angola, Ghana, Togo and Ivory Coast all made history by winning their qualifying group matches making it to the finals for the first time from Africa.
(Note: Africa’s last qualifying place will be decided later with Tunisia needing one point to end top of Group Five while Morocco must win the game at Rades).
Not in contention
AFRICA: Cameroon, Senagal, Congo, Sudan, Cape Verde Islands and Rwanda joined Nigeria, who despite winning 5-1 against Zimbabwe were edged out by Anglo because of better head to head record. Both finished on 21 points.
Beckham, famously red-carded at the 1998 World Cup against Argentina, became the first England player to be sent off twice with a second yellow at Old Trafford after what looked like a dive by Andreas Ibertsberger following a booking for elbowing the same Austrian midfielder minutes earlier.
Fate in balance
• Ten-man England ground out a precious 1-0 win over Austria despite a red card for captain David Beckham.
• Scotland go down 0-1 to Belarus to all but end their flickering hopes
• Romania’s alive and kicking with captain Adrian Mutu’s first-half winner against Finland
• Russia crushed Luxembourg 5-1 to hold hopes of reaching the finals
