NEW DELHI, January 17: A fine 101 by Devinder Dahiya for Webley Jeans went in vain as South Delhi beat them by two wickets in a thrilling opening encounter of the ninth BDM Challenge Cup at Ramjas sports complex (West Patel Nagar) here today.

A fine 82-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Rajeev Chauhan (63) and Rajeev Paul (49 not out) in 56 balls changed the complexion of the game after South Delhi were reduced to 90 for seven from 26 overs.

Batting first, Webley Jeans made 186, thanks to Dahiya’s century which included eight fours and three sixes and came off 119 balls. The tournament was inaugurated by former Test cricketer Gursharan Singh.

On Monday, Goswami Ganesh Dutt will take on Bright Club.

Brief scores: Webley Jeans: 186 all out in 43 overs (Devinder Dahiya 101, Kulbeer Gill 35, Rajkapoor 3 for 33, Ashish Malhotra 3 for 36, Jeetender Singh 2 for 23). South Delhi: 187 for 8 in 45 overs (Rajeev Chauhan 63, Rajeev Paul 49 not out, Gursharan Singh 27, Anurag 2 for 20, Suresh Kohli 2 for 32).

Railway football
Northern Railway (Delhi), Eastern Railway (Calcutta) and Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala) played goalless draws against Southern Railway (Chennai), Western Railway (Mumbai) and South Eastern Railway, respectively, yesterday in the 55th inter-Railway football championships which began at Dhanbad and Asansol, according to reports reaching here.

In today’s matches, South Central Railway (Secunderabad) beat Metro Railway (Calcutta) 1-0, North Frontier defeated Metro 4-0, last year’s champions Central Railway beat Diesel Locomotive Works (Varanasi) 3-0 and Eastern Railway beat Northern Railway 2-1.
