PANAJI, July 28: Goa Deputy Chief Minister Dr Wilfred D’Souza told the Goa assembly today that because of growing incidents of goitre and iodine deficiency disorders, sale of non-iodised salt for edible purposes was banned in the State. As per the goitre survey indertaken by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare all over country including coastal areas, high prevalance of goitre was observed, the Minister said during the question hour. The department of Food and Drug Adminisration would ensure that only iodised salt was sold and required iodine concentration was maintained.

Nagpur corporator held for murder

NAGPUR: Bharat Mohadikar, an independent member of the Nagpur Corporation, who was absconding after allegedly hacking to death 27-year-old Rekha Nikhare on July 17 over a land dispute, was arrested by the police here last night. Mohadikar, a history-sheeter, was externed from Nagpur but managed to contest the corporation.
