VASAI: One Lawrence Pasal Coelho (53) was killed in a road accident at Manikpur, Vasai,on Wednesday when a dumper coming from the opposite direction collided with the rickshaw in which he was travelling. He was admitted the local hospital where he died later. Incidentally, the dumper belonged to the Vasai Municipal Council and had no number plate on it. Police is investigating the case.

Panel to probe highway accidents

PUNE: Chandmal Parmar of Kum Rajashri Parmar Memorial Foundation, a Pune-based voluntary organisation, has been appointed as a non-government member of the committee instituted by the state government to find out accident-prone spots on highways and to suggest measures to curb mishaps.The committee, which will also analyse the reasons behind accidents on highways, will be headed by former secretary of the Public Works Department S R Tambe, a press note issued here on Monday said.

Liberation Day celebrations launched

PANAJI: President K R Narayanan will inaugurate the 36th Goa Liberation Day celebrations on December 19. He will arrive here on a four-day visit and inaugurate the food and cultural festival at the Miramar beach. Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane will unfurl the national flag and take the salute at the parade and present the awards for meritorious services, a press release said.
