GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat State Election Commission has advised the State government not to dissolve gram panchayats for at least three years after holding elections to avoid wasteful expenditure, and in order to respect the mandate of the people. The recommendations made by the Commission in its administrative report relating to holding of general elections of local self-government institutions, were submitted to the minister for urban development Khumansinh Vansia here on Saturday. The Commission also suggested that it be empowered to disqualify a member of the local self-government on the basis of the disqualification resolution of the 1986 Act in the case of defections and with regard to retaining the powers for allocation of seats for the elected members.

Leptospirosis toll mounts to 67

SURAT: The death toll in leptospirosis rose to 67 in south Gujarat with one more person succumbing to the killer disease at the Government-run civic hospital in the district town of Bulsar on Saturday. The total number of people so far affected by the disease caused by a bacteria transmitted to man through animals, was 219 according to official sources.

Warning against catching dolphins

PANAJI: Fishermen operating from various places in Goa and catching dolphins and turtles for selling them in the local market, have been warned by the authorities of wildlife division to refrain from the illegal activity. A spokesman of the wildlife division said here that turtles and dolphins are protected species and come under Schedule I. Killing of these animals is an offence under the wildlife (protection) Act, 1972 and the offenders will be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with a fine of Rs 25,000 or both.

Four arrested for setting girl afire

JALGAON: Police have arrested four youths for allegedly burning alive a teen-aged girl at Yowal, 40 kms from here, on October 1. According to police, Arati Sapkale (17) insulted the youths after they made obscene remarks against her and teased her. Soon after the teasing incident, six youths entered Arati’s house, poured kerosene on her and set her afire. She was rushed to a hospital in Yowal. After first aid, Arati was shifted to Jalgaon Civil Hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday. Two of the youths are still absconding, police added.
