In keeping with her Dalit agenda, Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati first changed the name of King George Medical College to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University and has now ensured representation to Scheduled Castes/Tribes and Other Backward Classes in its management. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting here today.

It was also decided that certain rules and regulations of CSM Medical University 2002, would be amended to facilitate representation of SC/STs and OBCs. Under the decision, inclusion of a professor, an associate professor or lecturer each from the SC/ST and OBC has been made compulsory in the college executive body.

Also, one person each from SC and OBC will be a member of the University’s Working Council. Provisions have also been made for reservation in the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff and also in promotion.

At the same time, it was decided to merge the Infectious Diseases Hospital and Primary Health Centre, Sarojini Nagar with the University.

In another important decision, the Mayawati government decided, for the first time, to promote manufacture and sale of low alcoholic beverages to mobilise more revenue. Under the new policy framed for this purpose, the alcohol content in the beverage will be 2 to 10 per cent. The bottling fee will be 15 paise on 1000 ml, 8 paise on 650 ml, 7 on 500ml, 5 on 325 ml, 4 on 275 ml and 3 paise on 180 to 250 ml.

For the remaining financial year, the licence fee on the retail sale of liquor will be Rs 100 and for the next financial year Rs 1,000. The licence can be obtained by any person in the district, owners of medical stores, departmental stores, general stores or by those registered with the Trade Tax Department or retail sale counters of foreign liquor and beer.

It was also decided to hike the import permit fee on imported foreign liquor. Private parties and clubs will not be permitted to import foreign liquor directly.
