Describing the Andhra Pradesh government’s move to open talks with Naxals as ‘‘retrograde and self-defeating,’’ BJP president L K Advani today said the Centre must intervene in the interest of the nation.

‘‘It’s a threat to national security with Naxals being allowed to move around with weapons,’’ Advani told reporters here.

He said Naxalism was a national issue and one state holding talks without insisting that Naxals should lay down arms was a self-defeating exercise. He demanded that the Centre intervene and put things in the right perspective.

‘‘The issue can be solved only through a dialogue involving all states affected by Naxalism,’’ Advani said after inaugurating the BJP state office here.

Taking a swipe at the Congress-TRS electoral alliance, the BJP president said it was not in the true spirit of the aspirations of the people of the region.

‘‘We formed three states only after there was a consensus among the NDA partners but in case of Telangana, the situation is otherwise,’’ Advani said.
