OKLAHOMA CITY, FEB 28: Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport scored an easy 6-1, 6-4 quarter-final win over qualifier Lea Ghirardi-Rubbi of France in the US $164,250 IGA Tennis Classic.

Davenport, ranked number two in the World by the WTA, needed just 17 minutes to win the first set and wrapped up the match in 50 minutes. She had two service breaks in each set.

Venus Williams, the third seed, bested Francesca Lubiani of Italy 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 but her sister Serena fell 6-1, 6-1 to fourth seed Joannette Kruger of South Africa. Seventh seed Sarah Pitkowski of France eliminated second seed Sandrine Testud of France 6-3, 6-4.

Ghiradi-Rubbi, ranked 104th, upset sixth seed Amy Frazier in the second round.

Novotna downs Kournikova

LINZ (AUSTRIA): Top-seed Jana Novotna gave Russian teenager Anna Kournikova a lesson at the $4,50,000 WTA tournament here when she scored a straight-set victory to reach the quarter-finals.

Novotna, 30, who won the first major tennis title of her career at the WTA championships atthe end of last season and reached the final at Wimbledon, took another step yesterday towards her first title of the season with a superb display of serve-and-volley tennis.

The eighth-seeded, 16-year-old Kournikova, who is tipped as one of the players expected to be challenging Martina Hingis for the World number one spot went down 6-1, 6-3.

In the day’s other quarter-finals, France’s third seeded Nathalie Tauziat went to Silvia Farina of Italy 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), while second seed Iva Majoli saw off fifth seed Lisa Raymond of the United States 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3. Dominique Van Roost upset fellow-Belgian Sabine Appelmans 6-3, 7-5.
