‘‘He used to chat on the Internet all night. We used to find him chatting at 5 am with people across the globe. He was very sensitive…it is possible that a chat friend deserted him…and he decided to end his life.’’

This is what a close friend of Bir Kariya Sikri Hansdah at IIM Lucknow told Express on Thursday, a day after the 22-year-old hanged himself and posted the event on a website.

‘‘He (Kariya) was the one who used to relieve us of stress that comes with the heavy study schedule at IIM,’’ says Sanjay Loha, Kariya’s classmate and best friend on campus. ‘‘The shocking death has left behind many questions regarding the motive.”

None of Kariya’s three friends at IIML — Sanjay Loha, Umakant Yadav and Ashok — know if their friend killed himself over a girl. ‘‘Even if there was something of this sort, he would not have told us,’’ says Yadav. ‘‘Even on Tuesday night, all of us were together in Loha’s room watching the movie, Armageddon, till 2 am,’’ Yadav says. ‘‘He was talking about the new project we had to start. He also said he would be buying a new digital camcorder after he got a placement. He was so happy…’’ Yadav adds. Kariya left a little later, borrowing a CD driver for re-installing a web camera.

Kariya did log on to a chat room but closed it soon. ‘‘He opened a website showing various ways to hang oneself and took a 15-second shot of himself in the nude,’’ adds Yadav.
