Central Railway’s usually grumbling commuters doffed their caps first. Train services were completely halted for a mere 25 minutes. Chief PRO of Central Railway Sunil Jain said: ‘‘The explosion occurred at 8.45 pm. Services on the slow tracks were restored at 9.05 pm and the up fast line by 10.35 pm.’’ Enquiry counters dispensed information on injured persons. Xerox copies of an updated list of the injured were displayed at various spots.

But those who stole the show were a group of nearly 25 young men who turned up to help. They requested people to leave, directed others to enquiry counters and took down names of missing relatives .

‘‘There were passengers trying to leave the station, thousands wanting to look at the mangled remains and many rushing in to enquire about their relatives,’’ says Jayesh Bhavsar. Bhavsar works as an operator at Sona Xerox and was among the volunteers.

Santosh Kadam, also an operator at Sona Xerox, adds that the thought of a second explosion did cross their minds, but ‘‘it was more important to clear the station premises.’’ They hung around till 11.30 pm.
