SURAT, Dec 6: Chunilal Chhagan Chaudhary, a constable with the Katargam police station, was suspended for dereliction of duty in the murder and rape case of two minor school girls from the Ashwini Kumar Road area 10 days ago.

Chaudhary was suspended on Saturday by DCP (north) K K Oza for not registering a case on the day the girls were kidnapped. According to the police report, the parents of the two girls had contacted the police on the same night stating that the girls were lost, but the complaint was registered the next day.

While the police have made no headway in the case, Police Commissioner Maniram has assured that the culprits would be nabbed within a fortnight.

The girls were kidnapped from a Surat Municipal Corporation-run school and their bodies thrown in a field at Tadkeshwar, 65 km off the city. The killing had lead to widespread protests, including a fast by students and a dharna by VHP and Bajrang Dal.
