Taking serious note of a girls’ welfare home running without license in Northwest area, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has asked the social welfare department to investigate into the matter.

“The parents of girls living in the home came to us complaining that they were not being allowed to meet the inmates,” DCW Chairperson Barkha Singh said.

On the basis of complaints from the parents, a raid was conducted there five-six days ago, she said, adding, that about 39 girls including eleven hailing from Jharkhand and 28 from Uttar Pradesh were staying in the home.

“On questioning the staff, it was found that the home located in a remote village in Burari was operating for the few years without any mandatory license,” she said.

The Welfare Committee has sent all the girls in the age group of 13 to 16 years to Nirmal Chaya in Hari Nagar area, a welfare home run by the social welfare department.

“We have asked the social welfare department to probe the matter,” Barkha Singh said while expressing doubt that some ‘illegal purposes’ were going on in the garb of the home.

“The matter is now with the social welfare department.

There are chances that the home running illegally might have been supplying the girls as house maids or for trafficking purpose,” the DCW chairperson said.

This is the first such case where the home has been found running illegally and there might be several others, she said.

“Keeping this in mind we are planning to write to the social welfare minister to conduct survey in the city to find out such malpractices if any.”
