VALLABH VIDYANAGAR, Sept 27: The authorities at the G H Patel College of Engineering and Technology (GCET) have decided to take back the 11 students who were debarred from the college for allegedly harassing some college juniors.
The decision was taken after parents came and apologised on behalf of the students. Principal N D Jotwani said the decision to reinstate the students was taken to prevent any harm to their career. Last Wednesday the 11 culprits took some juniors to a rented room outside the hostel campus and threatened other juniors that they would also be taken the following day. “We were definitely scared,” said one first year student. “We were apprehensive whether they would be harrassed phsically since they were taken out of the campus,” added another first year student.
A third year student pointed out that ragging freshers is not uncommon in the college and the seniors probably got a jot too bold since there was no previous instance of severe official action against raggers. “These seniors probably did not imagine they will land in such a mess,” added another third year student.
Sources in the college, however, defined the incident as one of the most indecent so far. “Since the juniors were called elsewhere it scared others in the hostel. But they intimated the teachers in time to prevent the issue to get out of hand,” a senior teacher of the college said. Senior students also pointed out that it was the first instance of students being suspended by the authorities.
Principal N D Jotwani said the decision to debar the students was to make a point for others and prevent such incidents in future. “These students were later made to sign on stamped paper, fulfiling certain conditions laid down by the trust and asked to pay a fine,” Jotwani said. The students also had to apologise publicly and were made to write an apology note on the noticeboard.
“The internal examinations are round the corner, hence it would affect their career had they been debarred,” Jotwani added. The college authorities have decided to conduct night checks to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The authorities will also keep a strict vigil on the seniors even during college hours.
