Three decades after the Emergency, it is perhaps easier to make some political admissions. At a function in the capital to commemorate Emergency hero Justice H R Khanna, who died recently, journalist Kuldip Nayyar and CPI MP Ajay Chakraborty exchanged some unpleasant notes. Nayyar reminded the CPI leader that his party had supported the Emergency. Chakraborty did not contest this and said, in fact, that his party had indeed supported the Emergency, but added that in the party’s Bathinda Congress later, it had regretted that decision. The CPI, he said, admitted that its decision to support the Emergency was a “mistake”.
