NEW DELHI, MARCH 25: With Delhi crime graph touching a new high, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today decided to request the Union Home Ministry for additional battalions of police force for the state.

The Chief Minister is said to be upset about the fact that she is continuously blamed for the the law and order situation though she has no control over the Delhi Police.

Talking to Express Newsline on Tuesday, Dikshit pointed out that she had sent in a proposal to the Union Home Ministry clearly outlining her government’s suggestions for a thorough restructuring and technical upgradation of the “ill-equipped” Delhi Police.

“It also included the proposal for 17 more police stations for the National Capital Territory. But the Home Ministry is sitting on it. They have neither acted upon it nor got back to us for further discussions. I had sent in the proposal right after I took over,” Dikshit said, literally throwing up her hands.

The Chief Minister also feels the Delhi Police force is in a desperate need of additional manpower, modernisation and technical upgradation. She said: “Delhi has an extremely porous border and is surrounded by semi-urban settlements which have shown a high incidence of crime. In such a situation the police have to have a better vigilance system in order to be equipped to deal with the difficult situation.”

In order to push the ball back into Home Minister L.K. Advani’s court, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) will hold a massive rally on March 28 demanding Advani’s resignation for his Ministry’s failure to maintain peace and safety in the Capital.
