Joshi to lead Delhi XI

Rajesh Joshi of State Bank of India will lead a 19-member Delhi XI in the All India Iron Ore Football Tournament at Rajhara (Durg district) in Madhya Pradesh, from January 26 to February 6. DSA vice-president, B.S. Chauhan will accompany the team as manager-cum-coach. The team: Vicky Sharma, Santosh, Rajesh Joshi (captain), Ajay Kumar, Mohan Nath, Nikhil Negi, Dharam Pal Rawat, Subhash Negi, Abjijoy Basu (vice-captain), Naresh Mann, Vinod Mukhiya, Lalit Singh, Yash Pal Rawat, Sameer Jung, Vimal Thapa, Neeraj Chaudhary, Ravinder, Dalip Bhandari and Pramod Rawat.

Gopesh Mehra dead

Veteran sports journalist Gopesh Mehra, who also served as bureau chief of UNI in Calcutta, died here on Sunday following a heart attack. Gopesh Mehra, 62, who worked with UNI for two decades, covered a large number of major sports events including Olympics and Asian Games. He also served as Sports Editor of Motherland. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

St Stephen’s win

St Stephen’s College won the men’s Inter-College tennis final defeating the defending champions Sri Ram College of Commerce 3-0. Rohan Malhotra (Stephen’s) beat Gautam Rishi 6-0, 6-2; Desh Gaurav (Stephen’s) beat Abhishek Gupta 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; Rohan & Desh (Stephen’s) beat Gautam & Abhishek 6-2, 6-4.

Azad Club lose

Guru Harkishan Club beat Azad Club 4-0 in the inaugural match of DHA knockout tournament for the D S Sodhi Cup at Shivaji Stadium. Centre-half Harminder scored the first two goals in the seventh and 12th minutes. Rajwinder Singh (17th minute) and centre-forward Vikram (40th) increased the lead. Delhi Youth got a walkover from Delhi Stars.

Mohanty hits ton

East Zone skipper B Mohanty (106 not out) helped his team beat North Zone by seven wickets in the fifth All India Oriental Tournament. In another match, West beat South by 94 runs. Brief scores: North: 205 for 7 (Sandeep Tiwari 60 not out, Ajay Soni 54, Ali Rashid 2 for 26). East: 206 for 3 (B Mohanty 106 not out, Ali Rashid 50); West: 212 (Sanjay Dabolkar 57, Sanjay Nadkarni 41). South: 118 (Sanjay Nadkarni 3 for 22).

Gyan Bharati beat SA

Gyan Bharati School, Saket (223 in 40 overs: Hitesh Tara 64, Aditya Gadia 56, Utkarsh Gautam 37, Rajat Khanna 25, K. Muldoon 2 for 36, J. Baxter 2 for 43) defeated the touring Parktown High School, South Africa (159 in 36.3 overs: Van Devente 34, E. Johnston 27, J. Wallington 42, G.S.Vivek 3 for 29, Angad Vedi 3 for 43, Sushil Sethi 2 for 20) by 64 runs at the Gyan Bharati School ground.

Garhwal advance

Garhwal Youth Cricket Club (205 for 3 in 20 overs: Manoj Sharma 77, Rajender Pawar 71, Praduman Patwal 40 n.o) defeated Indian Cricket Club (89 in 20 overs: Kuldeep 27, Bobby Dhaundiyal 3 for 5, Satender Ghildiyal 4 for 15) by 116 runs to enter the quarter-final of the Sarla Devi Memorial Cricket Tournament.

Pachauri shines

R K Pachauri (58 in 55 balls) helped Teri beat Times Bank by 56 runs for their third successive win in the Teri Trophy match at Palam B. In another match, JK Corporation beat GAIL by 25 runs.

Le Meridien win

Dominos (129: Gurmeet 27, Mukesh Sharma 4 for 18, Joshi 2 for 3) lost to Le-Meridien (133 for 3: Anil Verma 51 not out, Mukesh 31) by seven wickets in the inter-hotel tournament.
