NEW DELHI, December 3: Delhi University finished runners-up to Madras University in the final of the All India inter-varsity men’s table tennis championships, held at Annamalai University in Chidambaram, according to reports reaching here.

Left-handed Gagandeep Singh Mehta and Rajiv Ghai won a singles match each, both at the expense of nationally-ranked K R Sharad. But Madras University’s Deepak Kumar proved a thorn in Delhi’s aspirations by winning both his singles, beating Ghai and Mehta, respectively.

Gagandeep Singh Mehta gave Delhi the lead by beating Sharad in three games, the third game going into tie-breaker. Deepak Kumar restored parity for Madras in another long-drawn batting against Rajiv Ghai, winning the third game in tie-breaker. Bhargav gave Madras the lead for the first time in the final by beating Sanjay Khurana in two straight games, conceding 15 and 17 points, respectively.

When Ghai defeated Sharad in straight games, Delhi University smelled chances of victory. But despite a valiant effort by Gagandeep Singh Mehta in the decider match against Deepak Kumar, Madras romped home winners.

Delhi were represented by Gaurav Eshpunivani, Rajiv Ghai, Sumit Juneja, Sanjay Khurana and Gagandeep Singh Mehta.

Earlier, Delhi University claimed both the men’s and women’s team event finals in the North Zone inter-varsity tournament at Hardwar.

Results: Madras University bt Delhi University 3-2 (K R Sharad lost to Gagandeep Singh Mehta 21-15, 15-21, 20-22; Deepak Kumar bt Rajiv Ghai 16-21, 21-16, 22-20; Bhargav bt Sanjay Khurana 21-15, 21-17; K R Sharad lost to Rajiv Ghai 15-21, 18-21; Deepak Kumar bt Gagandeep Singh Mehta 15-21, 21-15, 22-20).
