In a major demolition drive, civic authorities in Padra razed to the ground over 150 shops and constructions on the Jambusar-Padra Road on Saturday.
According to Padra Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kamal Shah, the drive started at 9 am and continued till 6 pm. “There was a long pending case about the encroachments and notice was served in 2006. The High Court had not granted the stay order for the same. Since formal communication was made to take appropriate action to remove the illegal constructions, we initiated the drive,” Shah told Newsline.
He added: “With the help of the local police, the illegal encroachments were removed without any problem and resistance from the people. We will continue the drive on Sunday as well.”
Local sources, however, revealed that over 500 shops were razed to the ground. It was after a long time that such a major demolition drive was carried out in the state, they said.
Shah said they did not demolish the hutments. “Unless we are not shown the green signal to remove the hutments, we will not touch them since there is a question of re-location involved.”
