HYDERABAD, July 9: Dempo Sports Club of Goa waged a grim battle against the spirited Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) before subjugating the Bangaloreans 2-1 in the Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup football quarter-final at Lal Bahadur Stadium today. In the speedy encounter that saw plenty of action, all the goals came in the first 25 minutes - Brazilians Joao Soares (6th) and Anderson Rebeiro (21st) scoring for Dempo while Sudhakaran reducing the margin for ITI.The dominant Dempo nosed ahead when the game was six minutes old. Xavier Colaco sped to the right corner and lobbed the ball into the box where Soares controlled well and shot straight. The ball bounced off a defender but the ever alert Soares in one quick action put it in. The goal had some effect on the Goans as they raided repeatedly only to be thwarted by the ITI defence, well manned by Sunil Kumar, Annappa and Muralidharan.Meanwhile ITI too, designed moves from the wings with long passes but in vain. However, Dempo scored another goal unexpectedly, in the 21st minute. Francis Silviera showing a great deal of grit, moved on the right and sent a lob into the box where unmarked Anderson Rebiero directed it perfectly into the goal with his head to consolidate Dempo's position.ITI, looking severely dented with two goals down and Goans defending resolutely, immediately essayed long rangers which proved fruitful.Within five minutes of conceding their second goal, the Bangloreans cut one through midfielder Sudhakar. Receiving a pass from left Sudhakar, with no way out due to crowded defence, unleashed a 25-yarder which bulged the nets. The second half produced lively action with a lot of narrow misses and both teams effected timely substitutions. Kenneth, on whom the Goans attempted to put manacles, again in the thick of action 12 minutes into the half as his header off a right lob was tipped over by Ansari, and later Najeeb who replaced the injured Shin, took a nice shot from right which touched Dempo keeper's hand and went out.Dempo will meet Salgaocar, also of Goa, in the semi-finals.
