MUMBAI, July 4: A doctor doing a super-specialisation degree of MCH (Master of Chirurgie) in the plastic surgery department of the Nair Hospital committed suicide on Thursday night by injecting himself with an unidentified substance. The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is released.Sources said he took this extreme step out of frustration and depression following repeated rejection of his thesis papers.Dr Jagdish Hosur (31) was found dead in his hostel room by his roommate at 9 am on Friday. The Agripada police station has recovered a syringe and a suicide note from the room.According to hospital sources, Dr Hosur was supposed to submit his thesis papers last October before the MCH examination. However, his thesis was rejected by the examination in-charge, Dr N R Lalwani, as it was considered unsatisfactory. He was given six months to prepare for a new thesis topic.Hosur submitted his thesis papers after six months, but it was rejected once again by Dr Lalwani as unsatisfactory.The second rejection found the doctor jobless for two months. He complained to the vice-chancellor of the Mumbai University, Snehalata Deshmukh. The university deputed the case to Dr S N Deshmukh, dean of the faculty, who called a meeting and instructed the concerned authority to go through the thesis and finalise it before July 3.But the matter got delayed and was not decided upon by the scheduled time. Dr Hosur killed himself the same night. Doctors of the Nair Hospital on conditions of anonymity blamed Dr Lalwani for his suicide. They told Express Newsline, ``All doctors preparing for their thesis undergo similar harassment and frustration by authorities.''This suicide has sent shock waves in the medical fraternity. ``We must take action against the person responsible for this. It is unfortunate that we are still studying at the age of 32 when we should be earning money and looking after our families,'' said a doctor.He added that medical studies are very tough, and when the faculty is uncooperative, it becomes extremely frustrating . The Duty Officer of Agripada police station, Anil Tompe said the body has been sent to the J J Hospital for a post-mortem.
