DERA BASSI, Oct 12: To decongest traffic on the Chandigarh-Ambala Highway, the Dera Bassi Municipal Committee has drawn up a comprehensive plan to allot 10 acres of land to transporters for parking purpose.
With this decision, the long-pending demand of the local truck union to have its own parking area in the township has been met.
According to sources, the proposal to allot land has already been approved by the 13-member House of the Municipal Committee at its meeting held last month and the same has been informed to the local union.
Confirming the allotment, a senior Municipal Committee official said that this had been done following the directions given by Punjab Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh in his capacity as an ex-officio Municipal Committee member.
Presently, the truck union is operating from local Bus Stand, which poses as a major traffic hazard on the National Highway adjoining the town.
Capt Kanwaljit Singh is expected to lay the foundation stone of the new parking area by next week, the official said.
