If the $1 billion Infosys betting on Pune was the first step, this is the giant leap. The euro 55.8 billion Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telecom company, has set up a wholly-owned offshore development centre in the city for its info-tech arm, T-Systems International GmbH, to service international clients.

T-Systems India started its operations at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Senapati Bapat road on Thursday.

With an investment of euro 3.5 million per 100 employees, the company will work from a 8,000 sq ft facility which can be expanded later. Though it has a strength of just 60 people right now, they are part of the 42,000-strong workforce of T-Systems International. And like the euro 10.6 billion parent company, T-Systems India will offer solutions in telecom, finance, public sector, healthcare and manufacturing.

Tony Wadhawan, Managing Director of T-Systems India said the company planned to hire 100 people by December 2004. ‘‘The company plans to ramp up to 500 people by December next year,’’ he said.

Wadhawan, a German national with an engineering degree from Delhi University, said the India centre would develop new products and support existing ones for all clients of T-Systems International. The client list of T-Systems International includes Airbus, ABB, Compaq, DaimlerChrysler, Dresdner Bank, Nokia, Otis, Porsche to name a few.

However, Wadhawan was categorical that T-Systems India would not market products directly. ‘‘We are a production unit dedicated to customers of T-System Internationl with no sales team in India,’’ he said.

T-Systems India will also work on software needs of Deutsche Telekom, he said, adding, the biggest area of interest would be in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) with a focus on SAP. The other core areas are Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Business Warehouse and Internet technologies.

Significantly, the India centre will also test and validate software products made in Pune.
