AMRITSAR, Jan 3: P.C.Dogra, Director General of Punjab Police has launched a social reforms movement against drug abuse, traffic indiscipline and crime against women with the joint coordination of police and local citizens.

Dogra was addressing an interaction meeting with local eminant citizens, social clubs and non-government organisations here yesterday evening. He extended police help and sought the public cooperation in fight against the social ills.

Dogra stressed that teachers, parents and NGOs shall play a leading role in combating these problems for which police have already finalised their agenda. He said he had directed police to be harsh with drug smugglers and pedallers. The drug addicts however should be handled with empathy, he added.He said traffic decipline should be the part of school syllabus and added that it was also primary duty of the police to create traffic awareness among general public. He said SPs And ASPs would frequently visit schools and colleges for this purpose. He said police were going to constitute traffic sub committees on traffic management.

Expressing his concern over rise in crime against women, he said that women police stations should act as counselling and correction centres.

Gurdev Singh Sahota SSP Amritsar and organiser of the interaction meet, said that number of lives were lost in traffic accidents was almost triple than those were murdered. He said crime and drugs were interlinked as crime is often planned under the influence of drugs. He said police stations were piled up with complaints of crime against women mainly related to matrimonial discords.

H. S. Soch Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University found fault with the parents and teachers who he observed had failed to perform their duty due to various reasons. He said police had emerged a strong tool in present day administration and it can bring about a revolution in social reformation if its energy was properly utilised and force was trained for the purpose.

The participants said that insufficient number of drug de-addiction centres and resource constraints were basic obstacles before the social organisations. Many others pointed out that no parking place is provided in busy market areas. It was also pointed out that the instances of traffic rule violations were going on unchecked and many VIPs were involed in such violations.

Others who expressed views included IGP (border range) J.P. Virdi, DIG S.K. Goel, SSPs oF border range districts, civil surgeon Raajinder Singh, civil officials and representatives of Rotary Club, Lion Clubs, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Civil Defence and Chemist Association.
