Shikhar Dhawan (148) and Virat Kohli’s (154 not out) struck massive blows as Delhi piled up 337 for two on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group A encounter against a strong Karnataka here today.

The duo put on 266 runs for the second wicket, even as in-form opener Aakash Chopra left early, having scored only 6.

After the visitors opted to bat at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chopra was trapped by S Dhananjaya with the scoreboard reading just 22.

However, Dhawan and Kohli did not give the home bowlers any chance to build on the early success.

Dhawan hit 24 boundaries in his 211 ball-knock before walking back to pavilion. Veteran left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi had Dhawan caught by Robin Uthappa to break the partnership.

Kohli, celebrating his promotion to national under-19 leadership, was unconquered on 154, which included 22 hits to the fence and one shot over the ropes. Giving him company was captain Mitthun Manhas (26) when the stumps were drawn for the day.

Muzumdar hits 90 In Dharamsala, riding on skipper Amol Muzumdar’s 90, Mumbai scored 324 for nine against Himachal Pradesh on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match today.

Muzumdar got the support from Ajinkya Rahane (37) and Vinit Indulkar (37) while Vinayak Samant, who is playing on 31, and Iqbal Abdulla (32) chipped in too.

Left arm medium pacer Ashok Thakur grabbed four wickets giving 99 runs while Sarandeep Singh claimed two for 68. Muzumdar hit 13 boundaries and played 118 balls, missing out on the century as Thakur trapped him.
