.

Pakistan today asked Britain if the reported move by intelligence agency MI5 to bug its High Commission here had the backing of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s government.

A senior Pakistan official said Britain must give an assurance that it did not breach the Vienna Convention governing diplomatic links among countries.

‘‘We also want to know whether the operation had the backing of the Blair government,’’ the official said.‘‘Pakistan is insisting on a categorical assurance from the British government that it did not authorise any activity in the High Commission which is inconsistent with the Vienna Convention,’’ he said.

He said the matter has been taken up with 10, Downing Street. There was no official word from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
