With an eye on next year’s Parliamentary elections, the Trinamool Congress has asked the Mayor and senior leader Subrata Mukherjee to abide by party decisions at a meeting this evening.

Apart from senior party leaders, the meeting was also attended by Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors.

According to insiders, some of Mukherjee’s unpopular administrative measures — imposing water tax, taking away of rights of shopkeepers (on KMC lease) to transfer their establishments to the inheritors and most importantly, continuing with KMC commissioner Debashis Som — have earned Mukherjee the party’s wrath.

Party insiders said that Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee today handed over the directives to Mukherjee during the meeting and firmly told him that his policies might go against the party in the coming Parliamentary elections.

Mukherjee, in turn, told the party leadership that he needed 48 hours to decide on the issues on which the party had given him a guideline.

Sources close to Mukherjee said on the condition of anonymity: ‘‘This is definitely an attack on his office. Mukherjee would soon let his party know what he thinks about these steps.’’

When contacted, Mukherjee confirmed that he has received the guidelines, but declined to comment.
