LUDHIANA, MARCH 24: A full inquiry by DIG and SSP, Ludhiana, would be conducted into the murder of former councillor and Akali Dal politician Balraj Singh Gill.
This was stated by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while speaking to media persons after the bhog ceremony of Gill. He said that while the system of police cats was born out of the need to combat terrorism, it would not continue in times of peace. He, however, said that the government had no plans of examining the role of police cats during the years after extremism ended in the state.
Allegations have been made by Akali Dal vice-president Amarjit Singh Bhatia that Sukhvinder Singh Bhapp, the man accused of Gill’s murder who surrendered before the court, was a police cat recruited initially by the Patiala police and was with the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), Ludhiana. The SP and DSP in-charge of CIA operations have been transferred for inept handling of the case.Today, while speaking at the bhog ceremony in the presence of Badal, Bhatia further alleged that he had also been attacked by Bhapp on the same night. He added that Bhapp used to obtain AK-47s from Jammu and Kashmir and train young men to join his gang. He further alleged that two of the men, Paramjit Singh Pamma and Avtar Singh Taari, the accused in the kidnapping of Kashish Arora, the son of a leading businessman, were involved with Bhapp. Bhatia alleged that Paramjit Singh Pamma is a constable on the rolls of the CIA staff and Taari has been trained by the CIA, charges that are denied by the police.
Claiming that the system of police cats was defaming “Khalsa raj” in the state, Bhatia appealed to the CM to bring about an end to it. Earlier, speaking at the bhog, Akali Dal MP Amrik Singh Aliwal also said that the role of the police is suspect in the case and the perpetrators should be punished.
