After the BJP’s attempt to rekindle the Bhojshala issue, it’s Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh’s turn to stir the pot. Singh has written to Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, urging him to rein in Hindu organisations ‘‘bent on creating communal trouble over the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Masjid issue’’.

Singh, in his letter, has stated that the RSS, Bajrang Dal and the BJP, by their continual agitation over the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Masjid, are disturbing communal amity in the state and has urged the PM to personally intervene and rein in such elements.

Citing the recent visit of Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Bhavana Chikalia and Uma Bharti on June 3, the CM has said that the entry of a procession into the monument on the occasion and the aarti and bhajan inside the premises have hurt the sentiments of the Muslims.

Singh has also written that the minister’s statement saying the monument is a temple is inappropriate and cited the 1904 notification of the monument that refers to the Kamal Maula Masjid to prove his argument. Besides, the letter says, the British High Commissioner has informed the CM that the idol in London is of Jain goddess Ambika and not Saraswati.
