PUNE, May 18: While almost all 17 blood banks in the city, facing shortage, have made an appeal to socially committed citizens to donate blood immediately so that Pune may tide over the impending crisis, a few lucky ones are resorting to painstakingly maintained directories of interested donors to deal with emergency operations.

Shantilal Suratwala, former mayor and chief trustee of the Acharya Anand Rishiji Blood Bank has made an offer to patients in urgent need of blood.

The blood bank has a directory of 1 lakh interested donors, categorised into various groups, maintained since 1987, with their addresses and phone numbers. Interested people may contact him on phone numbers 537627 and 459222 round-the-clock.

“In 24 years this is the first time that hardly any donation camps were organised on May 1, Maharashtra Day, or Shiv Jayanti,” says Suratwala. While the Rotary Club members say it is the board of directors which decides how many camps are to be organised in a month, doctors feel that the intolerable heat has made it difficult to have outdoor camps. “College students, the most enthusiastic donors, are on holiday and even if a camp is organised hardly anybody turns up because of the weather,” he says. Blood supplies in banks are however depleting and to get back to the normal backup of 300 units per bank, at least one donation camp in 10 days is required.
