July 2: The Deputy municipal commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Ramesh Survade has opted out of his post two months in advance of the completion of his deputation.

Survade will join the minister of state for tourism and consumer protection Jagannath Patil as his personal secretary.

Survade claimed that he had `thoroughly enjoyed his tenure’ at the civic body.

“My tenure under the earlier commissioner Jairaj Phatak was the most rewarding and exciting one as we handled several challenges,” he said. Yet, rumours about Survade not seeking an extension for his post had been floating around for some time. While commissioner Sudhakar Kulkarni was away at Mantralaya for a meeting, other officers refused to openly comment.

“Earlier, we were answerable only to the ruling party and the opposition. Now, there are four groups – two within the Shiv Sena, as well as the opposition Congress (I) and the independents,” said a disgruntled officer. For instance, city engineer B D Metkar, also on deputation, was allegedly not approved of, and was given the marching orders after being told by the administration that he would get an extension.
