CAPE TOWN, JAN 2: Fast bowler Allan Donald took four wickets as England failed to take advantage of a century opening partnership on the first day of the fourth Test against South Africa at Newlands today.

Donald took four for 42 as England finished the day on 215 for five. Mike Atherton made 71 and Mark Butcher 40 as they gave England an ideal start with a first wicket stand of 115 but honours were even at close of play despite useful innings by Michael Vaughan (40 not out) and Alec Stewart (40).

England were in a powerful position when Donald started his second spell in mid-afternoon. With his third ball he had Mike Atherton caught at deep square leg and four overs later he dismissed Butcher for 40 when the left-hander top-edged a square cut to third man. After leftarm spinner Paul Adams had England captain Nasser Hussain caught behind off a glove for 15, Donald broke a 72-run stand between Stewart and Vaughan when Stewart fell to a hook shot when he was caught at backward square leg in Donald’s thirdover with the second new ball.

At that stage all three of Donald’s wickets were with the assistance of catches in the deep by Gary Kirsten, who was South Africa’s hero when he made a record-equalling 275 in the second innings of the drawn third Test in Durban. South Africa lead the five-match series 1-0.
