CENTURION (SA), JAN 16: South Africa, fired by a five-wicket haul from paceman Allan Donald, dismissed West Indies for 144 before building a a lead of 269 on the second day of the fifth and final test today.

At the close the home side, bidding to become the first team to inflict a 5-0 series defeat on West Indies, were 100 for one in their second innings. Paceman Allan Donald took five for 49 — his 17th five-wicket Test haul — as West Indies suffered yet another collapse on this dismal tour to be dismissed in 47.1 overs. Only captain Brian Lara provided any resistance, hitting 68 in 77 balls.

Lara’s dismissal started a collpase of seven wickets for 42 runs in seven overs as the visitors succumbed to a barrage of short-pitched deliveries.The West Indies’ problems were compounded when paceman Courtney Walsh, who claimed six wickets in South Africa’s first innings, limped off with an injury threeballs before the close.
