
CHANDIGARH, Nov 15: Opinder Singh of Railways and Meeta Bhandari of Punjab clinched the men’s and women’s singles titles in the fourth Tara Chand Memorial cash prize invitation badminton tournament which concluded at Community Centre, Sector 7 in Panchkula today. Opinder outplayed Harish Kumar (Railways) 15-7, 4-15, 15-10 while Meeta got the better of Yogita (Punjab) 11-1, 9-11, 13-10, to wear the women’s crown.
Both Opinder and Meeta also got a cash award of Rs 10,000 each for their efforts. The runners-up in the both the categories also pocketed Rs 5,000 each.
Opinder and Harish were, however, relegated to second spot in the doubles by Vijaydeep and Navdeep of Punjab 15-8, 15-13.
But Meeta combined well with Yogita to defeat Geeta and Nazma 15-6, 15-3, to score the double.
The girls under-16 singles title went to Vidhu of Punjab who beat Roma of Hryana 11-3, 11-7.

Om Prakash excels
Rohtak topped the medals tally with five gold in the men’s section in the Punjab National Bank 17th Inter-Region athletic meet which concluded at DAV College, Sector 10 here today.
Om Prakash got four gold medals for Rohtak. He won first positions in shot put, hammer and discus throw events and in 10 km walk. Narinder Saini got the fifth gold for Rohtak in javelin throw.
In the women’s group, Bimal Jass of Chandigarh took first place in discus and javelin throw. Her team mate Kamlesh Manchanda got first positions in 2 km walk and long jump event.
