NEW DELHI, February 15: Gold importer Vinay Mehra’s trusted employee attempted to rob him of Rs 40 lakh this afternoon. The police managed to nab the fleeing clerk at a picket in Daryaganj. He has been accused of criminal breach of trust and theft.

Mehra, who has a workshop in Kachcha Mahajini in Daryaganj, sent four of his employees to the State Bank of India with Rs 50 lakh. The money was being carried in three bags: Rs 10 lakh in two bags and Rs 30 lakh in the third. When the men reached the bank, also in Daryaganj, two of them — Rajeev and Tikkoo went inside to deposit Rs 10 lakh. Ghanshyam and driver Ashoo Mandal alias Babloo waited outside with the remaining cash.

The police say Babloo allegedly told Ghanshyam that he was wan-ted inside the bank. He then raced off in the car with the Rs 40 lakh. He was forced to abandon the car because of heavy traffic. He grabbed the bag with the Rs 10 lakh and started running, leaving the bag with Rs 30 lakh in the car.
