
AMRITSAR, Oct 13: Amritsar police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in a drug trafficking racket with the connivance of certain local police officials.
G.S.Sahota, Senior Superintendent of Police while addressing a press conference here stated that they had identified five police personnel including a sub inspector who were allegedly conniving with the gang.
He informed that departmental action had been initiated against the accused policemen. The other gang members included three women, Sukhi, Tochi and Bholi beside Jajj and Surinderpal.
Sukhi has revealed that about 30 quintals of smack was consumed in Amritsar every year and they have been getting their consignment from Meerut, Sahota said. She has told the police that a majority of their customers were students including girls and petty criminals.
Sahota said Nasha Virodhi, a new wing had been opened by the Amritsar police and had been yielded encouraging results. He said investigation were in progress.
Sahota informed that the police had nabbed six gangs involved in various crimes and recovered goods worth Rs 43 lakh from their possession including cars, motorcycles, gold jewellery in the recent past.
He maintained that the police had recovered lethal weapons which the terrorists had hidden and were trying to use.
Sahota said the police have arrested eight smugglers. Prominent among them was Karam Singh, a resident of Havelian who was operating in various countries and bringing heroin into India for the last 15 years.
Eleven new police check posts have been erected and six Gypsies and 16 motorcycles have been introduced to intensify the patrolling.
A women cell was also being formed.
