SURAT, Jan 7: District Supplies Officials, in separate raids conducted at four different places in the city and district on Thursday, seized illegally stocked essential commodities worth Rs 3.27 lakhs. While the raids were conducted at cooking gas agencies, grocery shops and authorised fair price shops by civil supplies officials of the district, legal proceedings have been initiated against those found violating the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act.
In the first raid carried out at a number of gas agencies in the city, supplies officials found disparities in records maintained and available supplies of the Abhi Gas Agency, Rander Road, Gajjar Brothers, Jehangirpura, Gar Bar Agency, Shahpore and Krishna Gas Agency in Nanpura area. Stocks worth Rs 1.01 lakhs were seized from the gas agencies and those found erring were booked under provisions of the Act.
In the second raid at Maheshwari Trading Company in the Ashwini Kumar area of the city, department officials seized grains worth Rs 1.21 lakhs and attached them to government property. Owner Mahavir Shah was found stocking grains without keeping proper accounts of the same.
In the third major seizure, department officials seized wheat flour worth Rs 1.01 lakhs from Gopal Flour Industries at Mota Borsara village of Mangrol taluka of the district.
Legal action has been initiated against the permit holder of the mill. In a fourth raid at Velachha, also in Mangrol taluka, sugar, kerosene and other items sold under the PDS worth Rs 2000 were seized from a permit holder.
