Slogans of Sunil Dutt amar rahe rent the air as Sanjay Dutt clad in a red kurta, and flanked by his sisters, Namrata and Priyanka, brothers-in-law, Owen Roncen and Kumar Gaurav, and three nieces, alighted from his Lexus with the urn wrapped in a red cloth. His 15 minutes at the grave of his mother Nargis, however, did not permit him a quiet homage as hundreds jostled to walk next to him.

Heedless of the scorching sun, they poured out into the streets and patiently waited for hours to pay last respects to Sunil Dutt, whose ashes were brought to his native village today. The security arrangements failed miserably with police themselves eager to get a look at Sanjay. Senior officers shouted but in vain as he placed wreaths on his mother’s grave and lit two incense sticks before the pictures of Nargis and Sunil Dutt.

Villagers who wanted to have a word with the Dutt family were left disappointed, as the crowds compelled Sanjay to beat a hasty retreat. ‘‘I could only wish them. But Papaji was the pillar of the family and we feel orphaned by his departure,’’ said Suraj Dutt, a cousin of the deceased leader.
