The Election Commission’s decision to transfer three senior IPS officers in West Bengal has come as a godsend for the Congress, with the party today saying it would send daily reports to the EC on the law and order situation in the state as well as the activities of its police officers.

‘‘The transfer of only three officers is not enough because there are hundreds of police officers down to the OC level in the state who are corrupt and play second fiddle to the ruling CPI(M). We will bring their activities to the notice of the EC on a daily basis,’’ Congress state general secretary Manas Bhuian said.

The first report will be presented to the state’s chief electoral officer, Basudev Bandopadhyay, tomorrow, he added. ‘‘We are going to meet him and submit our assessment of the law and order situation and the police officers’ activities,’’ Bhuian said.

On the basis of allegations from various political parties, the EC last week transferred Gaurav Dutta, DIG, Malda range; Basudev Bag, SP, North 24 Paraganas district; and Bemoy Chakrabarthy, SP, Hooghly district. The commission also declared that the officers would not be allowed to be involved in the poll process in the future.

The CPI(M) has criticised the EC over the decision and remarked sarcastically today that it would be better if the Congress had its members as officers.
