CHANDIGARH, Nov 24: City Mayor Gian Chand Gupta has said that the residents could construct hedges in front of their houses after seeking permission from the Municipal Corporation even as the MC removed encroachments in sector 8-A here today.
Continuing its anti-encroachment drive as part of its road-recarpeting programme, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today removed hedges and angle-irons from the road berms of Sector 8-A here today.
The enforcement squad led by Assistant Commissioner S.M. Sharma and accompanied by police force, also removed a room that was constructed in front of one of these houses. In all encroachments were removed from the road berms of nearly 86 houses in the sector. A JCB was pressed into service.
The officials claimed the operation, that began at 9.30 a.m. and continued till around 2 p.m., was smooth and peaceful.
Meanwhile, City Mayor Gian Chand Gupta said: "The MC won’t mind giving permission to the interested persons to build hedges in front of their houses but this will be subject to certain restrictions." "For instance, the hedge should be at least ten feet away from the road berm and its height should not exceed two feet. Also, no angle irons can be constructed," he added.
MC plans to carry out the drive in Sector 7-C tomorrow.
