Planning Commission on Monday said employment generation has almost doubled and initial trends indicated that the tenth plan target of 50 million jobs could be met if the eight per cent growth rate is achieved.
Citing figures, chairman of the plan panel’s task force on employment S P Gupta said employment generation rose to 2.04 per cent during June 2000 to December 2002 against 1.07 per cent in 1994-2000, the period when the country was passing through a recession.
Though initial trends mentioned in the NSSO 58th round showed positive signs of an increase in employment generation, Gupta said the exact figures would be available after the release of the large sample in NSSO 60th round expected by June this year.
He said the commisison was hopeful that the tenth plan target of creating 50 million jobs by the end of the plan period in 2007 would be met if the 8.0 per cent growth rate is achieved.
He said the increase in employment generation has been more in the urban areas and sector-wise analysis would be possible only after the release of the large sample.
