RJD leader and Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh on Wednesday urged the Congress party workers to emulate their party president Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to create awareness and push for effective implementation of UPA Government’s schemes like the NREG.

“It is very heartening to see the interest shown by the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the implementation of the NREG and other welfare programmes in rural areas. I hope that their party workers would emulate their commitment and show interest in these programmes,” said Raghuvansh Prasad releasing a book, ‘Eight Years (2000-2008) of Rural Development Programmes at a Glance: A Report to the People’ on Wednesday. The UPA Government will complete four years in office on Thursday.

Raghuvansh expressed dissatisfaction with the ambivalence shown by his party workers and said that he will take it up in his party. He has written letters to all party leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Lalu Prasad, and Balasaheb Thackeray, seeking their support for effective implementation of pro-poor programmes in rural areas.

The book released by Raghuvansh is an attempt by the Government to counter chief ministers of non-UPA ruled states who have blamed the UPA Government for inadequate release of funds for various welfare schemes.

“For 2008-09, the ministry is provided Rs 49,400 crore to rural areas, which is more than Rs 47,909 crore provided by previous NDA Government to states between 2000 and 2004,” claimed Raghuvansh.
