PUNE, June 19: The ongoing controversy regarding the number of school children that an autorickshaw should carry, seems to see no light at the end of the safety tunnel. In an abrupt volte face, Pune’s additional commissioner of police M S Maheshgauri has thrown his hands up, by categorically stating that the police has no plans for cracking down on errant auto operators cramming more students in their vehicles than what the law allows. It is business as usual then.
Let’s be clear on one point though. Irrespective of whether the parents want the existing system to continue on grounds of economy, whether the school authorities say that a change will cause delay, or whether the auto operators say that any reduction in numbers will be economically untenable, the final authority for road safety is the sole responsibility of the police. The police have to enforce safety laws without any compromise. Maheshgauri can’t just adopt a wait and watch policy.

M P Bhaya, Classic’, Kalyani Nagar, Pune-6, says that about 100 street lights were put in Kalyani Nagar and many of them have been put around Kalyani’s bungalow. He complains that not a single light has been put at the most important chowk at Kalyaninagar – G-Mart chowk – where almost all the Kalyani Nagar residents come for shopping.
