VADODARA, Dec 21: Officals of the District Supply Office raided several fair price shops in the district and seized essential commodities worth over Rs 77,000 from six shops on Monday.

According to official information, the raids followed after several complaints were received regarding improper maintenance of stock and sales records and siphoning off essential commodities like kerosene, sugar and wheat through bogus entries on ration cards.

About 450 kgs of rice, 548 kgs of wheat, 347 kgs of sugar and 169 litres of kerosene were seized from Ramdayal Agrawal’s fair price shop at Jetalpur. A case was registered against Agrawal for not maintaining proper records of his stock.

At Khanderao Market, the DSO team inspected Janak Gandhi’s shop and seized about 830 litres of kerosene stocked without any record. Likewise, more than 30 litres of kerosene were seized from Jivabhai Patel’s shop and 30 tins of groundnut oil and 40 tins of cottonseed oil worth Rs 46,000 were seized from Ramesh Patel’s shop in Pavijetpur town.

An official spokesman of the district collectorate said that more than 190 litres of diesel were seized from Liyaqat Ali Khan’s shop in the Nava Timberwada here. Also, kerosene worth over Rs 2,000 was seized from Maganlal Marwari’s shop in the Pavijetpur area.

DSO Ashok Singh told Express Newsline that stern action would be taken against the guilty even as strict watch was being kept on the stalls at theatres and other public places like railway station and bus stand. “The branded items were now being sold as per the maximum retail price and other related norms,” he maintained.

Denying information about reported scarcity of essential commodities like wheat and sugar in some parts of Ahmedabad, he said Vadodara district did not have any such shortage.
