Time 6.30 pm.Machine age man MARATHI stage actor, Sayaji Shinde, who is known for his off-beat roles in off-beat productions, has penned a Marathi play. Called Tumbara, it is (again) indeed an off-beat product. "I have been doing theatre for over 15 years now. I had a feeling that I was repeating myself, that I wasn’t doing anything new," he says. He sat down one night and wrote down all that he felt. His friends liked the 37 pages he wrote. Shanta Gokhale and Sunil Shanbag, the director of the play, realised the theatrical potential of the writing. "To me, everything I wrote wasimportant. But they gave it a face," says Shinde. The play is a monoact that delves into the relationship between man and nature, man and machine.

At Nehru Centre on April 17, 1998. Time: 6.30 pm.

Real and abstract

Vipta Kapadia’s recent works titled `Landscape’ are a combination of the real and the absurd. The artist has combined knife and brush to come up with these oils-on-canvas. "They are semi-absurd works. I love nature and used to travel a lot. So I have beeninspired by the places I have seen," says Kapadia. Initially she concentrated on realistic paintings but found herself moving towards the abstract. "I just paint whatever comes to my mind," she says.

The 18 paintings on display are priced in the range of Rs 2,500 to Rs 10,000. A student of fine arts from the Sir J J School of Arts, Kapadia has also studied Interior Designing and Decoration from Mumbai’s SNDT University. Kapadia has had two solo shows prior to this.

At ANZ Grindlays Bank Art Gallery, Breach Candy, till April 18, 1998. Time: 9.30 am to 2.30 pm (Monday to Friday) and 9.30 am to 12.30 pm (Saturdays).
