High-flying Everton was beaten 1-2 by struggling third division side Shrewsbury Town in the upset of the third round of the FA Cup yesterday.Nigel Jemson scored the 89th minute winner and the 38th minute opener at Shrewsbury’s home ground of Gay Meadow. Everton fielded a strong side, but substitute Niclas Alexandersson scored the only goal for the Toffees.Shrewsbury has the worst defensive record in the third division, conceding 47 goals this season and is ranked 19th out of 24 teams. The club, on the Wales border in central England, has never been in the top division of soccer.Everton is fifth in the Premier league.“It’s a strange feeling but a good feeling at the moment, I am enjoying it a little bit,” Shrewsbury manager Kevin Ratcliffe said.The win was sweet for former defender Ratcliffe, who captained Everton to its 1984 FA Cup win and 1985 and 1987 league wins.In a twist, Everton manager David Moyes was a defender and captain at Shrewsbury Town during the same time.In the four Premier league matchups in the world’s oldest knockout competition, last season’s runner-up Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 1-0 and two goals each from Matt Jansen and Dwight Yorke gave Blackburn a 4-1 win over Aston Villa.Bolton drew 1-1 with Sunderland, earning a replay game, while Southampton completely outplayed Tottenham for a 4-0 win, Michael Svensson scoring twice.Defending champions Arsenal, Manchester United, Leeds, West Ham, Charlton and West Bromwich Albion all won through to the fourth round.Manchester United beat Division One leaders Portsmouth 4-1 with a curling David Beckham free-kick and two penalties from Ruud van Nistelrooy.Van Nistelrooy, back after missing two games with an injured toe, converted penalties in the fifth and 81st minutes.Beckham’s 17th minute free-kick had little chance of being saved by Portsmouth ’keeper Shaka Hislop. Ed de Goey was sent on in goal.Both teams enjoyed a good run in the competition last season, with Boro losing to eventual winners Arsenal in the semifinal and Chelsea losing in the final itself.Southampton marched into the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday after humiliating Tottenham Hotspur in a 4-0 victory at St Mary’s.Southampton, who had been fortunate to beat Spurs 1-0 in Wednesday’s home league game, took a first half lead through Michael Svensson before goals from Jo Tessem, Anders Svensson and James Beattie turned the tie into a rout.The hosts, who are unbeaten at home this season and are riding high in sixth place in the premier league table, could have won by an even bigger margin as they ripped Tottenham’s defence to shreds with their neat footwork and passing.
