VADODARA, Nov 16: Flagged off from Lucknow in June 1998, the `Exhibition on Wheels’ organised by the Ministry of Railways depicting the growth and development of Indian Railway since India’s independence on Monday rolled into Vadodara, its sixth halt in the Western Railway Division.

Housed in 14 coaches and covering seven out of nine railway zones, the exhibition titled `Fifty Years of Excellence’ constitutes more than 1,000 displays delineating the technological achievements of the Railways, amenities offered to passengers, known and unknown facts about the Railways and its future plans. Poster shows, multimedia presentations, audio-visual displays and in-motion models demonstrate the exhibition themes.

Inaugurating the exhibition at the saloon sliding of the Vadodara Railway Station, Divisional Railway Manager K C Jena said, “The exhibition is an attempt to chart out the growth of the Indian Railways from infancy to its present stage for the awareness of the public. It is an effort to give a face to a faceless organisation with a staff of over 15 lakh working behind the scenes.”

Currently on its last leg, the exhibition is scheduled to conclude in Delhi on December 20. In the Western Division, the `Exhibition on Wheels’ has already traversed Mumbai Central, Valsad, Navsari, Surat and Bharuch. The train will proceed to Rajkot on Tuesday, and reach Ahmedabad on November 21, passing through Porbandar, Mehsana and Palanpur. The train will reach Anand on November 22 and leave for Nadiad the same day.

According to Jena, the mobile exhibition had proven advantageous considering its greater reach to the masses.

“A similar show in the city limits probably wouldn’t have generated as much enthusiasm as the rail-bound show passing through various destinations,” he said.

While in Bharuch, the exhibition is claimed to have attracted more than 20,000 people, in Vadodara, school children constituted the largest number of visitors. Railway officials, meanwhile, anticipated at least 50,000 people to visit the day-long show.
