• As Tavleen Singh pointed out in her column, ‘‘Less talk, more empowerment please’’, the Left parties are dictating the policies of the Manmohan Government. What is good for Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee seems to be bad for Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury and A B Bardhan. The UPA must go ahead with reforms in larger interest of the nation instead of allowing this arm-twisting.

• While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh often emphasises reforms and empowerment, he needs to empower himself against the Left. The Left-backed trade unions recently threw normal life out of gear with their 24-hour strike. The remedy is to bring in more FDI. That would help identify quality workers and also bring about a certain discipline in the system, besides leading to more growth and development.

• Tavleen Singh is right in suggesting that the PM must first empower himself. First, the Left parties need to be put in their place. Either they accept responsibility and join the government or else they sit in the Opposition. Second, Manmohan Singh must assert himself and stop Sonia Gandhi from interfering in matters of the government.

• In his column, ‘‘Mujhe kis rang ke Mahatma Gandhi doge?’’, Sudheendra Kulkarni expresses concern about the increasing corruption in our daily lives. Similar sentiments were expressed by Jaswant Singh in his ‘‘India Empowered’’ column. Yet, when they were in a position to usher some changes during the NDA government, neither Singh or Kulkarni did anything to eradicate corruption.

• While Sudheendra Kulkarni points out that one needs to bribe tax officials to get refunds for excess tax paid, what about absurd tax laws like the cess on cash withdrawal over a specified amount. Such meaningless laws lead to more corruption. The high taxes make it difficult to earn a decent living legally.
