Eunuchs or hijras, though a neglected section of society, apparently have an edge over others as they can contest elections both as a male and as a female. In an unprecedented case, a eunuch Santosh Mahant, who contested and won the municipal committee election as a male from Ward No 10 of Bhucho Mandi in 1992, is in the fray to retain his seat from the same ward which, this time however, has been reserved for women. the Election Commissioner of Punjab has cleared his case on medical grounds.
HYDERABAD
The Police Commissioner’s Task Force has launched a massive drive against eve-teasing and has registered cases against 281 persons in the last two months. Additional DCP (Task Force) B Sreenivasulu said the drive has helped curtail this menace and appealed to the people to lodge complaints against eve-teasers at his office.
VADODARA
The Vadodara Centre for Animal Rescue and Emergency or VCARE-a voluntary organisation which started work in the City recently aims to provide facilities for lodging pets while their owners are away. Chairperson and Managing Trustee Nandita Amin said that the organisation will not only be a care centre for animals but will also provide basic veterinary services and an ambulance service.“This feature would be the provision of animal therapy for children, ” she added.
PUNE
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reiterated its allegation that Tata Honeywell Limited, a software company has been evading octroi. Company officials issued press statements on Wednesday asking the PMC to desist from maligning the company and warned that legal action could be taken. But vice-president of the company (Human resource) Ajit Badve refuted the charge.
